In Memoriam

Rusty Owens

Rusty Owens

I have known Rusty for at least 25 years and all four of our kids swam for him.

Son Jim, as a swim coach has followed many of Rusty's coaching techniques and swimming philosophies, which has led to much of his success as a coach.

Rusty's legacy and positive impact will always live on through the many swimmers and coaches who were so fortunate to experience his unique personality. Rusty was an honest, caring man, with a wonderful sense of humor. The immense amount of respect and regard Rusty received from everyone who knew him in any capacity was truly amazing. When Rusty talked everyone listened. All who had contact with him will have nothing but praise and truly good memories. His enthusiasm and energy were contagious. In spite of his notoriety, Rusty was always a humble man.

I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to create LPAC with Rusty from a kitchen table and some hand written notes approx. 20 years ago. The instinctive simplicity of his approach was part of his brilliance. His dream, passion and love for the sport created an excellent swim program for our area that will always be a testimonial to his selfless commitment to swimming.

Rusty was one of a kind in every way who impacted an immeasurable number of people throughout his life.

He will be truly missed as a friend and leader in our community; a legend in his own time.

With our sincere condolences to the family,

Steve, Deb, Danielle, Jim, Steve, Jr. and Patrice

To one of my dearest friends, and greatest mentors, I wanted to take this moment to say thank you. I believe firmly, that in this life, certain people are brought into our paths for a reason. Outside of my parents, you have had the biggest impact on my life, bar none. As one of only 2 people allowed to call me Jimmy in this life, (the other my late grandmother), you took an interest in my well being from the start. I could not ask for a better coach, and more importantly, a better role model to look up to during my formative years. After 10 years in the water, I was blessed to spend another 15 years alongside you coaching on deck. The coach and teacher I am today is shaped largely by everything you taught me. I cannot tell you how many times I have caught myself saying things, doing things, and thinking… that definitely came from Rusty.

To everyone you accused of picking a wedgie, called a ‘Fat Little Turtle’, or threatened with having to kiss a girl, know they all share in my grief of your passing. However, at the same time, please know that I am filled w/ great joy to have been able to spend so much time learning and developing a great friendship with such an incredible mind as yours. You were truly one of a kind, and I don’t believe I will ever meet anyone else like you.

No doubt, you leave this world having made an incredible difference. The world is a better place because of the countless lives you altered positively through your constant words of wisdom, and dedication to the swimmers you loved so much. You gave your heart and soul on deck everyday, even up through your final years. Though I had the chance to share some of these thoughts w/ you when we last spoke in August, it is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye for good on this Earth. If heaven has a swim team, they just got their new head coach, and someday when we meet again, I’ll be ready to coach right by your side once again. Until that day comes, know you will be missed dearly, and never forgotten. Continue to watch over us as your legacy continues to live on across pool decks all over the world.

Until we meet again…

Jimmy
